The German pianist, organist and composer Johann Wilhelm Hässler (1747-1822) trained and practiced as an organist and pianist in Germany, but from the 1790s onwards, spent much of his time overseas, first in London, and then (for the last 25 years of his life) in St Petersburg and Moscow. He wrote mainly keyboard music. For more information on him, see:http://www.hoasm.org/XID/Hassler.htmlThis set of 24 studies in 'waltz form' is forward-looking in its design and concept, and works through all the keys. The odd-numbered pieces are all in major keys (in a cycle of ascending 4ths), and each is followed by an (even-numbered) piece in its tonic minor key. In performance, the minor key piece acts as a 'trio' and is followed by a 'da capo' of the preceding major key piece. On these videos I have performed them in this way The edition I have used (by Erich Doflein (1900-77)) only has one piece for which the 'da capo' is specifically instructed to be played without repeats. However, I have followed that instruction for all of them here. Jules Verne's classic adventure is perfectly matched with Ray Harryhausen's timeless movie magic in Mysterious Island. Based on Verne's sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, this rousing Civil War-era fantasy begins when a band of Union war prisoners(Michael Craig, Michael Callan and Gary Merrill) and one Confederate straggler escape in a hot-air balloon, which crash-lands on the titular island of mystery. Under the capable direction of genre specialist Cy Endfield, the story features giant oysters, bees, a prehistoric Phororhacos (a giant chickenlike bird!), an undersea cephalopod, a giant crab, and enough danger to keep its resourceful ensemble on constant alert.
